What Is Asbestos, And Why Is It Dangerous?

Asbestos is a heat-resistant fibrous mineral that is found insulating materials. Many older homes and buildings have asbestos. Asbestos is not dangerous unless the particles are released in the air. The fibers can be released if the asbestos is disturbed or damaged. It is estimated that 5,000 workers die each year due to asbestos exposure.

Many places have banned asbestos. However, if a home or building that was built or refurbished before 2000, then it may still have asbestos.
