Dr. Wilson is a sociologist that often reflects on the causes of some crimes. Some of his theories coincide with the Deviant Place Theory of criminalization, which puts focus on the neighborhoods an individual frequents and the violence or behavior associated with it. Dr. Wilson’s article, “When Work Disappears” describes the issues of race and those individuals living in inner city neighborhoods. It also proposes some solutions to these problems in order to improve these neighborhoods and the lives of the minorities residing there.

Due to the stock market crash, and the decline of the economy, many individuals in the workforce are affected. Many workers lost their jobs during the economic downturn. Many of these individuals had manufacturing jobs that required little to no education. Once displaced, it was hard for the unemployed to find decent paying jobs, or jobs at all. Even though the economy rate is improving and the unemployment rate is declining, many uneducated workers are still facing difficulties. Many employers now require high school educations, or maybe even college educations, which often limits minorities and those living in inner city neighborhoods. Wilson saw race as a factor that contributed to life in inner city neighborhoods and even unemployment rates. Many minorities today are discriminated against in the workforce, and often judged on misconceptions. Many employers believe that these minorities are lazy, have poor work history, and no education. If these individuals cannot find employment, it can in return produce levels of social organization. These minorities often reside in these inner city neighborhoods that lack sufficient levels of social organization, which can result in joblessness, crimes, poverty, violence, and even drug trafficking. These citizens often lack the resources to lead a successful life and often fail to become a productive member of society. Although it is not always the case, often the individuals that are living in inner city neighborhoods are the racial minorities. That means that race often has to do with what neighborhood an individual will live in, what job they can attain, their education level, and the possibility of drug activity. Wilson is simply stating that both race and inner city neighborhoods have a detrimental effect on individuals.
