There are four main characters in the short story called," What we talk about when we talk about love.". In the begin of the story, we meet the first character, Mel McGinnis. Mel is 45 years old and he is a cardiologist.(721). Mel is tall and rangy with curly soft hair(723). Mel has two kids from his first marriage. according to the narrator," Mel thought real love was nothing less than spiritual love". (722) Mel was telling then that they are been in love more than once in their life before they meet their spouse. (725) Mel also like to drink his grin and playing tennis. He uses to love his ex-wife, Marjorie who bankrupt him(729). Mel care for his kids even those he hates his ex-wife.

The second character is Teresa but they also call her Terri. She is Mel's current wife. They have been married for four years but they were together for 5 years. Terri believes that her ex-boyfriend loved her even if he was abused. Mel and Terri were living in fear when they first started dating because her ex- boyfriend want to kill her and Mel. Mel doesn't believe that is real love because he was willing to kill her. (722). The narrator described Terri as a bone-thin woman with a pretty face, dark eyes and brown long hair.(722). Terri loves wearing her jewelry.(722)

She is Nike's wife. She is 35 years old and she is a legal secretary.(723) Nike and Laura meet during their work. They had been married for 18 months. Plus she believes that what she and Nike had is what love is. (724)
