When We Talk About Love Raymond Carver

Have you ever stopped loving someone? If so, can you justify it? Or are you just not willing to admit even the smallest piece of love you still have for that person? No matter how much you think you don’t like a person you once loved, they are always going to have a small place in your heart. Love comes in many different forms, some people just don’t know the best way to show it. You can begin to love someone in a short amount of time or a long time. According to Raymond Carver, the author of What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, love never dies.
Mel tells a story about an older couple that got in a car accident and he sees how, no matter how long you are with someone you don’t love them any less. The couple had been together for many years. They both ended up in full cast and bandages all over their bodies and were unable to move. Terri’s ex-husband showed his love by abusing and threatening her. He would drag her around the room by her feet and tell her that he loved her, while her head continued to hit furniture. “‘It was love’ Terri said. ‘Sure, it’s abnormal in most people’s eyes. But he was willing to die for it. He did die for it.’” (Carver 744). Now no one is saying that it is acceptable to treat your loved one this way, but to her this was love. Some people, like Nick and Laura, express their love by being affectionate toward their loved one. Others show their love through their words. There are many ways to show your love toward someone. Even people you think that you no longer love. There are some small things that you have done for that person that you think didn’t mean anything but to that person they did and that shows that your love hasn’t died, it just may not be as strong as it once
