I don't feel George was doomed from the start. Not doomed at all. He was lucky. Lucky that he was giving an opportunity to succeed financially and he blew it. He blew it by getting involved with someone I don't think he loved. I think he was lonely and pursued Alice to keep him company, although I do believe George had feelings for her, he just didn't have enough of them, Angela was his true love and he couldn't live without her. He was fortunate to run into his wealthy uncle that offered him a job. Fate may have started him out, but his choices got him to where he ended up.
