In her essay “The Burrito: A Brief History,” Angela Morales modestly narrates a few humorous encounters she and her family have had with burritos. Morales initially describes the burrito as the “food of workers,” referring to her mother’s heritage, to how embarrassed her mother was at a young age to eat a burrito in school because it was not a typical food in her surroundings. Although Morales does give emphasis to the “common” burrito, she also introduces the modified burrito and how the burrito has adapted to society and changed over the years. The author then reminisces back to her youth when her mother would give her and her siblings burritos to eat in the car during errands or while waiting for the car to be washed.…

To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. This is in contrast to most “American”, or english speaking, grocery stores I have been to, as they are often wide and spacious, with plenty or room to showcase products. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…

In her recent work, "Political Correctness devours yet another College, fighting over mini-sombreros" Catherine Rampell depicts two students being impeached for celebrating their Latino friend's birthday by wearing mini-sombreros to socially act like a Mexican can be offensive to other Mexicans and to Bowdoin College. I've always believed that people who culturally appropriate their culture to another are not human decency. For instance, the fact that the tequila themed partygoers dressed like Mexicans of the Mexican culture as funny or to mock that culture is culturally inappropriate. In Rampell's view, this act is known as, "cultural appropriation" (pg 2). Rampell agrees when she writes, "Bowdoin students that were Americans created…

Suzette’s feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness are primarily caused by how she personalized her adverse childhood experiences. The abandonment by her mother as an infant and her emotional abandonment by her father resulted in negative schemas about herself. Another contribution to her core belief of worthlessness were the repeated broken promises by her mother, lack of attention from her father and emotional abuse from her stepmother. Suzette sees herself as needing someone else to rescue her and to make her feel self-assured, as indicated by her comment about her boyfriend that she “doesn’t know who I am without Devon.” Suzette has not indicated any positive relationships in her life and currently has no support system.…

Sigrid Undset’s novel, Kristin Lavransdatter, features several strong female characters navigating life and society in fourteenth-century Norway: Kristin Lavransdatter, Fru Aashild, and Ragnfrid. Of these three women, the strongest among them is Fru Aashild. Her intelligence, disregard for societal pressures and success in life support this claim. Fru Aashild, a woman who once lived in seclusion from her community, is welcomed with open arms when she aids in the recovery of Kristin’s younger sister, Ulvhild, after an accident. Although Fru Aashild lives near Sil and has for many years, it is the kind-hearted help in a desperate time, and many times in the future, that bring her openly and freely into the community life.…
