Rhetorical Analysis
Author’s Paragraph- The Help was published on February 10, 2009. Kathryn Stockett, the author was raised in Jackson, Mississippi where the story takes place, she moved to New York where she worked in publishing and marketing for nine years. When The Help was published she lived in Atlanta. I think she meant for this book to be written for adult audiences, but in my opinion anyone that is mature enough to handle it can read it. She grew up in Jackson, Mississippi when there were still slaves when she first started to write she was writing in the voice of Demetrie, who was her maid when she was growing up. She later became the character Aibileen. Despite being very close to her maid Demetrie, Stockett never thought about what Demetrie's life might be like outside of the work she performed for the white household, she wrote this novel to bridge the gap. A lot of The Help is written in two different POV’s. Every chapter in the book, except for chapter 25, is written in 1st person, with Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter telling their stories. Chapter 25 is the only chapter in the book with a title, “The …show more content…
Minny short and big, got shiny black curls. She settin with her legs splayed her thick arms crossed. She seventeen years younger than I am. Minny could lift this bus up over her head if she wanted to. Old lady like me’s lucky to have her as a friend.” (Imagery). “If chocolate was a sound it would’ve been been Constantine's voice singing. If singing was a color it would be chocolate.” (Metaphor). (TheBook) “There be Miss Skeeter in a red dress and red shoes, settin on my front steps like a bullhorn.” (Simile) (Stockett). Minny makes references to the “Terrible Awful” she did to Hilly. She says she’ll never make a chocolate pie for anyone ever again. This is all foreshadowing to the moment after the Benefit when Minny finally tells Celia what she did.
