When In Maui By Colleen Nye: Character Analysis

We all have someone that lookouts for us, even if we know it. It could be a family member, a friend, or perhaps even a stranger. The novel, “When in Maui” displays the growth and transformation of Vivianne Cook and her best friend, Alice Tyler. Colleen Nye writes about how the pair stands together in tough situations and are always on each other’s side no matter what troubles are brought. Alice’s vacation in Maui turned to have a little bit more than she had expected upon meeting a famous celebrity. In the beginning of the novel, Vivianne does not feel fully confident. She barely over 5’ and had just gotten back in shape. She was also not satisfied of her new short haircut (Nye pg.3). There is also a bit of comparison to her beautiful friend, Alice. Being married and a mother of two daughters, Elizabeth and Victoria, her “edge” seemed to be gone (Nye pg.3). She makes money off of being a columnist for a local newspaper. She says the job suits her and she has the ability to work from home. Vivianne strongly wants to go on the Maui trip, however there are obligations at home she would rather attend to. She had just gotten out of a messy divorce and is having some hard times along with that. Alice works at restaurant food chain in their home town. Vivianne would often visit Alice during work as a little getaway (Nye pg.3). Between taking care of herself and her children, Alice has saved enough money to plan their trip to Maui, Hawaii. Alice becomes aggravated when celebrity, Ryan Perry, seems to be ruining all their Hawaiian plans. Once meeting him, Alice agrees to dinner with Ryan a friendship has been created. To get closer to Alice, Ryan decides to call Vivianne to fly down and surprise Alice, promising to cover all expenses. (Nye pg.
