“ When I Was Your Man” is a pop piano ballad in the key of C major. Bruno Mars sings to a woman who he let get away because of his selfishness and ego from becoming famous. One of the struggles he has to face with this breakup is that he has to watch his lover with someone else, but wants only the best for her. He uses these lyrics “ I hope he buys you flowers, I hope he holds your hand, give you all his hours” to wish her well and to be with someone who can do what he was not able to do.
