My parents decided it would be best for the two of us to be together so I stayed on the normal track for elementary school. The first time I ever noticed he and I were different was that same year; he had a computer game that taught sight words that my dad would make him complete a level a night. After a couple minutes he would get upset and begin to cry because he didn’t know the answers, so I would whisper each one into his ear. I can relate to Jeffrey Gallet’s story and am not surprised by the lack in resources, time school staff utilized to actually work with him on a particular concept(s) that he struggled with, and the verbal abuse that he received, due to the learning disability(ies) that he possessed. I was inspired by his story. It moved me so much so that I desire to share my grade school story with the class. I did not have a learning disability that I knew of, but I did have a lot going on outside of the four walls of the classrooms that I sat in. This made it difficult for me to stay focused on the concepts being taught within my classes.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

I believe that all learning stems from relationships. Students, myself included, respond best when they feel valued and appreciated by their teacher/professor. I think this is especially true when we talk about literature and writing in the classroom. In an article by Beth Morrow, she presents the notion that, “the strength of our student relationships makes the difference in translating our passion for teaching into their passion for learning” (Morrow).
