In the beginning of the story the book starts with the description of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. During the summer of 1912. It introduces Francie the main character who is eleven years old, and her brother Neeley who is ten years old, just one year younger. They collect junk from the street to get money. They take it to Carney, he exchanges this junk for pennies. The Nolans live in an apartment and are not too wealthy. Katie works as a janitor who works in exchange for a rent, and is the mother of the two kids, and Johnny is Katie’s husband, he is a singing waitress and the father of these kids. There is 4 separate books, in the beginning of the book 2 it flashes back to 12 years earlier, to when Johnny and Katie first met. Katie and Hildy were good friends, and Hildy is dating Johnny at this time and later Katie falls in love with Johnny and they start dating.
