It can be agreed that loss is a catalyst for change and can shape our identities in ways that are unexpected. Firstly, this can be seen when loss may have a significant impact on individuals in ways that transform their lives. Secondly, this also can be seen when loss can affect individuals in diverse ways. These concepts are demonstrated in the novel Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy and in the related text speech “Freedom from Fear” by Deng Adut 26 January, 2016.…

Throughout life individuals make several decisions. Most individuals have certain goals they hope to achieve throughout their lives, varying from fantastical, distant triumphs to limited but realistic objectives. The choices we make have multiple outcomes but one often struggles to determine what they must do in order to restore honor and certainty. In Dancing Bear, the author Guy Vanderhaeghe develops the idea that honor and certainty which individuals possess is constantly receding from their grasp; such desires inspire individuals to dwell upon the past which results in substantial realizations. Thus, when an individual struggles to restore honor and certainty they often reflect upon their past, identity and values which results in the powerful infatuation inspired by ones ambition.…
A major part of life is pursuing dreams. Life would almost be pointless if people did not have ambitions. We wouldn’t have a reason to get out of bed if they did not have a dream that they want to achieve. Anne Laurel Cartier, the author of the short story “Leaving the iron lung,” specifically looks at how having a dream can affect one’s life. Carter uses conflicting characters, character transformation, and the setting to illustrate that to be content with life one needs to follow their dream, even if they need to commit and sacrifice to achieve it.…

From the time we are children we are often told to shoot for the stars, or follow our dreams. As cliche as these sayings are, they are imprinted on the youth for a reason. Poetry allows for writing to reveal transitional work and in this case the transitory connection between internal conflict and the will to grow. Louis Jenkins’s “Football” serves as a model for this effort. While the poem is about football and difficult choices, it disguises as the internal battles of the speaker as well. A notable take is how Jenkins guides the readers’ attention to the speaker and his confusing decisions he presents as a quarterback. Jenkins has the readers unknowingly focus in on the speaker himself and these odd comparisons and disconnecting ideas within his words.…

John Carpenters ’s 1982 horror film, The Thing was made as a premise for social commentary on the deterioration of humanity, warning society of the devastating potential of thinking as individuals in isolation rather than a collective. These themes are accentuated through the use of an alien specimen that enters the world of American male scientists based in Antarctica. The alien (or “Thing”) infects living organisms and attempts to take over the human race by ‘imitating’ them, leaving the men in a fight for their own survival as they try to differentiate between “human” and an alien imitation of a human. The term humanity itself is redefined in this film and is stripped to its bare minimum: the mere biological relationship between humans.…
