When I first left Canada, I felt that I was doing something that helped protect the honor of Canada and Britain. I had also wanted to be seen as a hero back at home and never expected the war to last this long.
What were the conditions like in the battle field?
We fought in trenches that were cold, dirty, muddy, and smelled terrible. I was one of the few lucky ones who didn’t catch trench foot, but then again I lost an entire leg. Out in the battlefield, you live in a constant state of panic. Every day, the shells would whistle above your head and you pray to God that it wouldn’t land near you. Beside you, your friends and comrades lay lifeless in the trench, either dead or too afraid to move.

Some people discovered this later, though. When I first stepped into the battlefield, the intensity of the battle gave it away. It wasn’t like anything I’ve seen before. I had originally thought that the war would only last a few months, like everyone else, but after the few months had passed and there was no sign of the war dying down, I was certain that the war will last very long. Maybe it was because I had envisioned the war lasting a long time from the start that I had grown to deal with it. However, I must admit that I was struck with despair in the beginning. The realization that you might never be able to see your wife, children, and friends back home again is enough to make any man
