Analysis Of When Death Comes By Mary Oliver

When you look at everything surrounding you, do you find meaning in the simplest things? Are you creating a bigger issue than what a problem could be? Are we all living our lives to it’s fullest potential? In the poem, “When Death Comes”, written by Mary Oliver she writes about death and how we should prepare for it. She explains we should live our life in the most abstract thoughtful way possible. She also suggests that we should know the purpose and functions of our surroundings in great detail. I agree with Oliver, that preparing for death should be living life to the fullest because when the time comes we will be assured we lived a purposeful life. This is important because one should not have to live with regrets we should live a …show more content…
But did we experience everything possible in that time? A quote from Oliver’s poem explains this idea perfectly. Oliver states, “I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world”. In this quote I feel the author is trying to get the point across that you should live in the moments you are alive in this world. For example when you visit a different country you do not get the same experience as someone who lives in that country. When you visit you just get the basics. A visitor is not able to see everything and get to experience everyday life in that country. Where when you live in a country you get to know everything in your city, the people, the food, the buildings, and even the nature. I feel like this comparison is what Oliver is saying in the quote. This can turn into a good advice for me to live in the moment. I should really take the time to educate myself about the purposes everyone and my surroundings have. To know all the details and the inside out of the world I live in. I should embrace what is surrounding me because I have my own interpretation of life. This can apply to me as well to appreciate all the things and I have an even the things I do not have because it creates my life experiences. Before my time is up I want to be able to say I have done it all and lived my life to the

In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “A Psalm of Life”, he expresses two key values: to be zealous about living and to appreciate life in its entirety. From the start of the poem, Longfellow contends that “life is but an empty dream!” and that it is not a fantasy, far-fetched, and difficult to create into a good reality. He believes “the soul is dead that slumbers”, because those souls have lost the motivation for life as they think “the grave is its [ultimate] goal”. I agree with Longfellow with this value, because if a person doesn’t have a passion to live, then he/she won’t have the will to accomplish anything. The passion serves as the hero of a person’s life, and without that passion we will be “like, dumb, driven cattle” who don’t have…

The world is a buzzing place with endless sites to see, people to meet and possessions to own. The problem with this buzzing society, is that we forget to live in the moment, and enjoy each day to the fullest. People are consumed with worrying about how much they ‘have’, which can leave them competitive, materialistic, selfish, and forgetting what is really important. Henry David Thoreau believes to combat this, people need to simplify their lives, minimize the amount of friends they have, meals they eat, and possessions they own (1102). Thoreau graduated from Harvard university and throughout his life he worked as a tutor, house painter, carpenter, mason, surveyor and pencil maker.…

The author of “On Natural Death” by Lewis Thomas begins his essay by being lighthearted about death and progressively gets more into depth with the aspects of death for different living things and whether or not they detect pain. This is to objectify the fact that death is destined for all living things and that it shouldn’t be planned or feared but instead, it should be accepted. The first strategy Lewis Thompson uses is denouncing books about death. Lewis emphasizes that death is becoming planned with there being “so many new books about dying” placed next to “the health diet and home repair paperbacks”. Lewis insinuates that the topic of planned death is considered ordinary to where it’s placed next to everyday topics and accepted by society who doesn’t think twice about it.…
