Mary Rowlandson’s piece “Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” written in 1682 is centered around Rowlandson’s time being held by Native Americans because she was a Puritan. Benjamin Franklin’s “Way to Wealth” written in 1758 is a passageway into Franklin’s thought process and various advice pieces as his persona Poor Richard. The similarities in the two pieces is the passion they both have for their desired way of life. Both pieces of literature hold strongly to their beliefs and create persuasive pieces that move the reader to understand their way of thinking.…

Humans are widely diverse: with a population over seven billion, each containing unique personalities, experiences, beliefs, morals, just how much of a person’s individual humanity can he or she consider their own creation? In the field of psychology, there is a debate called Nature vs. Nurture which considers the effects of environmental and hereditary traits on the development of personality. Despite being perhaps the largest topic in psychology, there has yet to be an accurate answer as to how much either Nature or Nurture plays in one’s life, but, there is an underlying debate which is even more existentially troubling: how much of an individual’s lifestyle is in their control. In The other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, Moore explores the lifestyles…

Christopher Johnson McCandless went on a grand adventure, but did not come back to regale the experiences he had to his friends and family. His death was the talk of the nation for a short while, so there are many opinions about Chris’s actions. Some think he just had to be insane to do what he did. Others put him up on a pedestal, and admire him for his courage. My opinion is that Chris was not crazy, he was just a stupid, inexperienced, arrogant boy who wanted to prove he could survive on his own in the wild.…

Society today is beginning to think more about themselves and less about others. Many people would desire to live a life solely beneficial to themselves rather than benefiting others on the way. This is self-centered, considering it can cause problems for others. In the book Into the Wild , Jon Krakauer portrays well that Chris’s actions made him inherently selfish. He created sentimental relationships and left a vast amount of them.…

Some say McCandless was stupid for going out into the wilderness without knowing what he was doing. But he wasn't, yes he had errors that cost him his life but he enjoyed the journey. There are many critics and non believers who doubt that he did not find what he was looking for but we can not be sure if he did or not. He wasn’t mentally ill but he did have things in his mind he needed to sort out. Like Krakauer says, McCandless was something else, though no one exactly knows what he was.…

McCandless lived an incredible life. He dared to live in a way that reflected a transcendental lifestyle, something that we do not see much of nowadays. McCandless traveled all across the west, looking for that final, sweet adventure and ended up in Alaska, starved to death. The peculiar thing about this though, is that McCandless seemed to have no regrets. “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” This is what Roman poet Horace believed to be true but if this was true then Chris McCandless would have been able to go on his journey and stay alive. He ran into obstacles like starvation, malnourishment, and he got lost and he was not able to overcome these problems or bring out the talents that could have saved his life. Reading analysis of Clotel or the President's daughter places the topic of the historical setting of slavery where white men would clover slave or black women and slave women would ironically indulge themselves in their white oppressor. The characters of the story each stand for an actual platform during slavery. For example, the character Mrs. Green's hatred towards Mary, Clotel's daughter, even after selling her mother back into slavery shows how white women expressed their disdain towards black women. White women were opposed to slave women and even more disgusted at the fact they were sought after by white men. Though his writing is fictional it does offer the modern-day reader actual insight to past slavery.…

Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom is an excellent book about faith. The author has a great experience and a master’s degree in journalism, which gives him the skills to write books. Additionally, as a child, his schools and university were religious, which gives him the knowledge to write about faith. Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and The First Phone Call from Heaven are just three of the 42 books he has written. Furthermore, this book has great points about life lessons and faith, but these three are the most important to me: money could be used in different ways but it does not determine happiness, getting to know people, and giving second chances, and accepting all different religions.…
