Candido starts working for many days but then he is let go because the man he filling in for had returned and the guy had papers. Al felt somewhat bad, but he didn’t want to risk getting himself in trouble. After that Candido can’t seem to seek employment. When he does find employment he is hired to work for 3.25hr and on the last day of work the white man decides he is not going to pay him. The migrants had been called on the labor exchange, which is when Candido goes to Canoa park with his wife. The go out to a Mexican restaurant to eat. Candido goes to seek work, when a gentleman comes to them and lets them know he might have a room available for them to rent for two days in his aunts place for twenty dollars. America stays behind well Candido goes to check out the place and negotiates the terms. He does not come back till late in the night, by that time America was worried, scared and sleep. Candido returns with a bleeding head and news that he been tricked and robbed. They both are both hungry by this time and Candido take America to the back of the Mexican restaurant that they just eaten from in the morning to digging for trash. Author T.C. Boyle slightly attack the self-obsessed middle-class America who are unexperienced views of the world are detached from the reality of the suffering that many people go thru in order to survive just like Candido and America did. Not only does he break down the issues of our Border through the textual logic wording he descriptive with the living condition that many Mexican people face. The author somehow carefully assembled up issues that are important, but relatable to our actual real-world ignorant values. The way he tries in these parallel issues of how the free open community now wants to build a gate to keep those who don’t belong out ties into the real issues we are facing with a wall that separates our white people and Mexicans has been breached in this country. Boyle's uses dark sarcasm tones throughout the novel exposing the hypocrisy and racism in our society well some will find some of the wording to be harsh I find interesting and truthful. His characters stand out because of the dark events that occur overall connects them in the novel.
