Ever heard a popular song in a commercial? Who hasn't? By putting a song into advertising, artists and advertisers alike can benefit greatly. Artists gain popularity, and by extent, funds they need for expenses such as touring and equipment, while advertisers become more popular among fans of the artist and make a lot of money. It's a win-win situation. An artist's music should be used in advertising, as both artist and advertiser benefit from it. An artist's music should be used in advertising because it promotes the artist. Having an artist's music in a commercial could increase the artist's popularity, helping to spread influence and maybe even gain listeners. Think of the U2 album released for free to all iTunes users in 2014. That album was disastrous for both the band and Apple, as both entities received massive backlash from "fans and critics alike," (Johnson). However, even though the downside to music in advertising, the benefits outweigh the possible consequences. As a new band just starting out in the music industry, advertising could be a key to success. In the Carter article it says, "However, Scally does assert that the rules could be different for smaller bands just starting out." Music in advertising can have a downside, but the pros outweigh the cons. To conclude, music should be used in advertising because it benefits both artists and advertisers. Artists can gain fans and money they need, while advertisers can benefit both financially and in terms of popularity. One may shudder to hear a good indie band in a McDonalds ad, but keep in mind; the band probably made quite a bit of money off of that ad that could be used in the future for a tour or maybe even a new album. So the next time a song plays in an advertisement, think not of the consequences this could cause, but of how much the artist benefited from
