We have talked a lot about not taking things for granted because we had seen those who were less fortunate than us. After this role play of being wheelchair bound, I dare not take the gift of walking for granted. I sat in the wheelchair thinking long and hard about what I was about to do. It started out funny but that is not how it ended up. My journey first began with me simply trying to get around from room to room. We have hard

Unfortunately, a variety of deadly diseases exist, leaving people to battle for their lives every day. Many people feel helpless and lose hope at a certain stage in their disease, whereas others, fight back and continue to live their life to its fullest potential. In the personal essays “On Being a Cripple” written by Nancy Mairs and “Living Under Circe’s Spell” written by Matthew Soyster, both authors have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a severe disease in which they approach differently. Through a very negative tone, Soyster addresses those who do not have MS, by sharing the limitations and restrictions the terrible disease has on his life. On the other hand, Mairs uses a motivating persona to argue that nothing should stop a person from doing what…

Out-of-Class Speech Critique For my out of class speech critique, I went to listen to Josh Birnbaum talk about his experiences as photographer for Illinois’ wheelchair basketball team. In his speech, he talked about the struggles that the team faced on the way to reaching their goal of winning a college national championship. Furthermore, Josh documented the lives of the players and showed the audience the struggles they faced every day, but showed us how each of them overcame the obstacles. Additionally, he talked about the life long relationships he made with the player by going out with them and practically being a member of the team.…

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

While in Brazil on a mission trip to volunteer in schools with Saint Vincent College, I worked closely with the children in the favelas and visited their homes to better understand how they lived. Every house contained multiple families and in a one room basement lived the most loving family who changed my life forever. The youngest child in the family was only seven years old and he had more surgeries than years on earth. During his time he had lost his legs and right arm but never his spirit or smile. I had never seen so much strength in a person and the way his mother talked about his medical care and how much it did for them as a family struck me.…

For the disability ministry project, we were asked to choose a practicum experience where we shadowed or spoke to someone helping someone with a disability. For my project I chose to spend some time in the class for disabled children at the high school I graduated from. Throughout the glimpse of time that was allotted for this particular practicum experience I learned a lot of exciting things about disabilities, but also made some disconcerting revelations. While spending the day at school I was able to interact with the students, teachers, and overall staff of the high school; gaining insights, perspectives, and forming thoughts on everything I had witnessed. From start to finish, my day back at school has left a lasting impression on me.…

The day on the front was like no other, it was peaceful, dreamlike. All the airplanes had ceased fire, the tanks were no longer being operated. I was taken to a hospital next to a local train station; the hospital was dark, gloomy, and had a prominent stench of death.…

We were first introduced to palliative care P1 year with Dr. Phillips. From her brief lecture, I felt like it was an interesting topic and could potentially be a difficult field to work in. Personally, I had a great-grandfather that was utilizing at home hospice care for a little over a year before he passed. I didn’t get to see much of the healthcare aspect…

In eighth grade my class visited an assisted living facility for mentally challenged adults. When we arrived, we joined the residents in planting tomatoes and carrots in the garden. I worked with a man named Tom, and while we worked we connected by talking about the Astros and the Rockets. Later in the day, we were eating lunch and he told me how happy he was to have me come and work with him and how he always loves when people come see what he does every day. Seeing mentally challenged adults like Tom living normal lives made me realize that people often have misconceived notions about those who do not fit into the regular roles of society.…
