Deodhar, S. (September 21, 2016). What's Wrong With Work Today? Retrieved on September 23, 2016 from http://www.hr.com/en/magazines/all_articles/whats-wrong-with-work-today_itcu7fyo.html

Article Summary In this article, Deodhar examines six key factors that influence organizational productivity. The first is the culture of overwork wherein demands are increasing but productivity remains measured through hours spent at work rather than what has been accomplished during those hours. The topic is also relevant to course as it relates to managing an organization. Although the article was very informative and had tons of information backed by research, the author did not include citations or linkages, which is why I deducted points. Also, I took off points because of idea repetition and introduced ideas that were not fully explained in the article.

Structure and Format: 15/20 – The article was organized with headers and no grammatical errors were noted. However, with ideas that were not properly placed in the body, it made reading the article hard to follow, which is why I deducted points. The introduction was well put but the conclusion needs some improvement.

Site and Access: 10/10 – I retrieved the article from HR.com which is a reliable and trusted website for articles and publications. Finding an article in the site is relative easy because their placement are in a reverse chronological order with the most recent on top, while the oldest last. Also, the site makes navigating easy with the horizontally laid out

The writer Francesca Minerva, in her article named “Why shouldn’t the baby live?” published in 2011, in the Journal of Medical Ethics, in which she discussed the claim of euthanasia in infants , and whether it should be legally and ethically permissible or not, she took the side of supporting the previous claim, and she called for allowing for the euthanasia in infants. The writer used in her article the Rogerian method to support her claim, as she didn’t propose her point of view or clarified her stands till the 4th paragraph, and before that her tone was neutral till she stated her claim and then her tone changed to be with the euthanasia in infants. Why We Hate HR: Reaction Paper Hammonds’ “Why We Hate HR” makes it very clear that he does not like the Human Resource (HR) department, however Hammonds’ opinion about why he doesn’t like HR lacks important key facts and issues. One of the main issues Hammonds emphasizes about HR is the departments’ lack of involvement with overarching strategic mission planning of the company. He mentions several reasons for this including that HR does not understand business strategy, HR is not concerned with the bottom line of the company but rather more concerned with employee satisfaction, HR is more concerned with preventing litigation and enforcing rules then helping individuals and finally, HR is too concerned with picnic planning and payroll which,…

One practice of work, that is now a normal part of everyday working life, is the concept of “precarious work” and the rise of temporary jobs, which raises criticisms and concerns from many. Precarious work is defined as “employment that is uncertain, unpredictable, and risky…

Some people believe that workaholism involves a personal reluctance to disengage from work and a tendency to work or think about work anytime, anywhere. Hamilton and Denniss define that workaholics are those “who are driven by inner compulsion” (2005, p.12). While others define workaholism as a form of self-imposed expectation of their performance in work. According to Quick, Henley and Quick, this expectation “can be directly related to the level of psychological involvement one feels toward that role” (2005, p.39). In brief, workaholism is a psychological addiction to work and it is an illusion of needing to keep working continually.…
