What´s Urogenital Myiasis?

The disease myiasis occurs mainly in rural regions, and there is a direct relationship between the poor health, low education, and age with myiasis (). It is more common in patients with disorderly behaviors, mental health problems, diabetics, those with immunodeficiency and in patients with low level of the economy (). Exposures to purulent lesions attract and stimulate flies to lay eggs or larvae on lesion. Furthermore, population habits, such as sitting or lying on the ground with the naked body and poor hygiene increase the risk of myiasis. In temperate regions, myiasis occurs mainly in the summer months while in the tropics it is more likely to occur during the year (). Infestation is public in tropical countries, especially India. Myiasis in people who live in developed countries with good health, especially in Central Europe, is very rare. Fly larvae are able to pierce and penetrate the healthy or necrotic tissues. So, tetanus and secondary infection may occur as side effects. Microhematuria, albuminuria, and leukocyturia may be observed after laboratory examination.

External urogenital myiasis of women usually involves vulva, perineum, urethra, vagina cavity and the uterus (). Cases of urogenital myiasis mostly involve flesh flies and blow flies (). External urogenital myiasis of men usually involves glans penis, scrotal skin and penile urethra with induration and ulceration in the involved region (). Internal urogenital myiasis is uncommon in which maggot involves an internal urogenital tissue. Painful urination and urinary obstruction symptoms are associated with this type of infestation (). This type of myiasis in human occurs accidentally.
Megaselia scalaris, Psychoda albipennis, Eristalis Tenax, Piophila casei, Fannia scalaris, Fannia canicularis and Muscina stabulans are some genera mostly involving urogenital tract.
