RE: Police Qualifications
I chose to do my report on one bigger city in Wisconsin. The city of the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) has various mental and physical exams that are required in the hiring process of becoming a police officer. I know that there are bigger police departments out there, but seeing that I found out so much information just on one city that I didn’t feel the need to compare MPD with another PD. The minimum requirements to be on the MPD are first you must be at least 21 years old to join. The applicants that do qualify for the next phase of their exam are the physical ability, oral interview, writing exercise, and background checks. The written ability test will be a multiple choice exam that will test a variety of abilities, such as memory, visualization and basically there judgments, which will be very important for the applicant’s effective performance that they need to, become a police officer. The next test that they do is the Work Styles Questionnaire, which is designed to determine a candidates motivational skill as well as their values and attitudinal which helps them distinguish the applicants personality. They will be presented with many short statements and are supposed to agree or disagree with each statement. Then they do a test on the applicant’s life experience which they are tested on their own personal lives. The Physical Ability Test concentrates on the person’s ability to perform the tasks ordinarily performed by a police officer while on the job. They will have to do some of the task that the police officers go through on the job. It is supposed to encourages both Police Officer daily activities and determine the physical abilities that are required to perform a Police Officers job. The Oral Board Test is basically a test to see what the applicant’s verbal abilities are.
