What's The Noction Of Being Special?

Decent Essays
The noction of being special is what drives us. People in society long to be different; however, they find it difficult. We end up trapped in our own minds due the judgement of people. The few of us brave enough venture out into the possibilities of the world to be individuals, may find themselves where they first started. It is often that when someone attempts to be different, they end up conforming. This person will leave the norms of one group, not knowing that the change in their actions is the norms in another group. Group A and group B both think they are different; however both groups are wrong. Both groups conform. The only difference is the rules in which they follow.

“The reward for conformity,” Rita Mae Brown once said, “is that everyone likes you but yourself.” This meaningful quote expresses that individuals maintain hatred towards themselves in order to conform to horrible decisions and acts. Millions of people have attempted to conform to the actions of the world such as dressing a certain way, making bad decisions, or selecting a poor choice of friends, to experience the pleasure of fitting in, but the attempts to do so only made life even more agonized and disastrous. To be a conformist, one must first lose his or her own morals and instead focus on what society has in store, whether it may be good or bad. Expressed through the use of a great deal of violent and cruel acts, conformity is the main…

the mindset of wanting to fit in but simultaneously stand out leads to everyone being similar. But as Emerson stated in his work “Self-Reliance”, “we but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of the divine idea which each of us represents” (369). Showing how people being afraid to completely express themselves manifest the movement of fitting in. Another example from Thoreau of modern day Americans losing opportunities because they want to fit in is, “... that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life in which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours” (Walden 385). He’s depicting the idea that if everyone lives the life they imaged, rather than one to be accepted, success is a…

A plethorabig percentage of people in the world follow the road most traveled and do not deviate from that path. They try so hard to “fit in,” and be like everybody else. For example, when a brand of shoe is trending, like Nike, everyone buys Nike shoes so they are “accepted” in the public eye. Another example is when people take pictures of their food and post it on social media for “likes.” These examples of uniformity happen everyday in our society, and eventually people start to look, act, think, and talk alike.…

In a world comprised of people who hardly seem different from anyone else, do you believe that people would so readily relinquish their sense of self? The dictionary definition of conformity is the “ compliance with standards, rules or laws.” On the other hand, individuality is defined as “ the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked.” Bradbury reveals the theme that conformity suppresses individuality through fear, exclusion, and the criminalization of the individuals who dare to defy social normalities. People tend to notice things that are different. If something stands out or is different than the rest, it immediately draws attention, and attention draws scrutiny. By doing something different or simply by naturally standing out, a person is inviting scrutiny and judgement as to whether that difference is a positive or negative thing, or, as Turkish philosopher Mehmet Murat Ildan insightfully and correctly put it, a blessing or a curse. Changes in policy or thinking are often noticeable and inevitably reacted to with either popular support or popular condemnation. When Franklin Roosevelt changed the government’s position towards the economy forever by instituting his “New Deal”, or when Donald Trump decided to change the way we guard our border by erecting a wall, a change was made in the attitude of our government in regards to the welfare and security of America, and they were certainly judged for it.…

We, as humans, like to believe that we always stand out in a crowd and never conform to please society. This freedom to be an individual is held to a higher degree than most of our other freedoms. Humans believe that we always use this freedom to speak our opinions and rarely admit to changing our views to comply with a group. As much as we deny that we don’t, it seems that more often than not, we follow the crowd. In her article “Group Minds”, Doris Lessing was on the right track when she described how humans stand for choice and individualism, but when faced with the situation, most tend to fall in line with the majority.…
