Goldwasser brought up the issue of inadequate use of internet among American people given that “about 33 million Americans who are fluent in texting, e-mailing, blogging, IM’ing” ( 237). Even if that were accurate, we are losing sight of what might gained from this type of writing style. Kids are able to express intimate writing and more than ever cherish a good story and see the power that speech holds (237). When I read this part of her essay, subconsciously I found myself expressing whatever came to mind onto my social media as I felt an urge to share. At the same time, in some regards it came as a way to practice writing even if it wasn’t the traditional way. It brought forth a way for me to write even though I know writing hasn’t been something I’m crazy about. What we’re lacking today more than before is staying focused on long pieces of writing ( 2). We cannot hold our attention for long until start getting bored or tired of reading a long passage, we are always looking for a quick way to get information into our brains without getting into a deeper thought process to analyse the information. As consequence, we are left with someone who barely knows anything and is basing their knowledge of the few points they got out of a source. At times I’ve been guilty of skimming through a source of information to only find a certain detail or answer but the same time it depends on what your focus is for example, maybe your using this quick method to find answers for a game or in some cases to fill out a “Fill in the blank” assignment as some teachers use to introduce new material. It is a way just for you to get familiar with the new material being taught and not to cement it at that moment. Carr is right when he said that we might skim source of information, but he seems to be on more dubious grounds when he claims that we do not retain information when we go through it. In my case when researching for a paper or trying to read an online article I will go quickly about reading an article but that doesn’t necessarily mean I didn’t understand what is in front of me. Rather, people have different ways to learn and there isn’t a fixed way
