What's so great about the Bradley Orchestra? Seventh grade violist Niya Brown says that performing at concerts makes her feel confident. According to Niya, there's nothing more satisfying than the improvement you've made after each chair test. This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

    Musicking The Now Analysis

On the surface, one might not think that the great Italian opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and the acclaimed indie group Dinosaur Jr. have much in common. One concert, for instance, took place in an intimate performing arts center to an attentive and quietly reverent audience while the other in a loud, rough-and-tumble rock venue to a lively and informal audience. Indeed, there may appear to be no similarities between the effortlessly skilled classical stylings of the UNT College of Music and the deliberately ramshackle indie sound of Dinosaur Jr. However, with these two concerts, we see Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking” in full effect and, critically, two different forms of the same musical elitism.…

American Overture for Band is a level six, wind band, piece that has been played and enjoyed by advanced high school and university bands. The scoring is dense and somewhat atypical, however. Jenkins includes a sting bass, a cello, three baritone parts, three flute parts, and four clarinet and trombone parts. Jenkins includes the string bass part because is important to the texture of the piece. The tuba cues, like all the cues in the piece, are “safety doublings” and “should be played only in the absence of the instrument shown”.…

Do you have that song that makes you feel like you are unstoppable? Is there a tune that pumps you up so much, that you believe you could run for miles? The article “The Music of Power: Perceptual and Behavioral Consequences of Powerful Music” discusses experiments that were performed in order to determine if there is a direct correlation with music and a sense of power. With the suggestion that music has the ability to influence the human mind researchers decide to dive into a more specific area of study. It was no exception to Steve Reich. Steve Reich, who had disavowed getting interested in and composing classical music, innovated playing tape loop as a significant role in his music. In the most of his music of the late 1960, the ‘phasing process’ - two tape loops of the same recorded phrase are played at the same time, and slowly those tape loops become being out of synchronizing by giving different lengths of the two loops - was worked for the basis composition’s technique for the tape loop and eventually, this composition method gave birth to two pieces,…

Steve Reich, a Minimalist composer and artist, has been composing music since he was about 14 years old (Morrison). Upon entering Cornell at 16 years of age, Reich studied philosophy- focusing specific attention to the compositions of Paul Wittgenstein (Morrison). Wittgenstein was involved in a serious accident, leaving him with just his left arm, and so created piano arrangements designed to be played with one hand (Oram). Returning to Reich, he developed the use of repeating patterns in his music after he collaborated with Terry Riley on “In C” (Morrison). It is with this theory of repeating patterns that Reich’s unique musical philosophy developed.…
