The first reported spotting of this pathogen was in a pediatric peritoneal dialysis patient. The pathogen was difficult to isolate due to the similarities to other common pathogens. When trying to detect Kocuria rosea the results were delayed for more than a week due to growing requirements. The bacterium grows best in temperatures 25-35 degrees Celsius and is strictly aerobic. The organism can also be found in soil, water, and on the skin.…
In order to obtain accurate numbers from the now grown-out Sordaria samples, a small procedure was followed. First, a sample of fungi was taken from the border of a WT and TT section in the Petri dish. A slide was prepared by placing one drop of water on the middle of it, the Sordaria sample on top, and a slide coverslip on top of the sample. The eraser of a pencil was used to lightly press on the coverslip in order to release the asci so that they can be seen. Under a microscope, a multitude of asci were observed a recorded.…
Pill bugs name is woodlouse. Climate change will have an effect on animals, plants, and humans. With climate change rising many animals are going to get extinct in the future. Pill bugs are small animals that can live under rocks, and when you catch one they always tend to rolled up into a small ball. Their body temperature has to match with the environment that they live on.…
Is the Growth of Microcystis and Lake Water Protists Affected by Phosphorus Concentration? _______________________________________ Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine if algae will grow more if fertilizer is added to the water where the algae is growing. Background/ Introduction An algal bloom is an increase and accumulation of algae in freshwater or salt water systems.…
This was also incubated at 37 degrees Celsius for 48 hours and had an isolated colony. The gram stain showed clear purple gram-positive cocci. After getting a good gram stain the unknown chart were referred to in order to choose between appropriate biochemical tests. Referring to the unknown chart the three possible bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Enterococcus faecalis. The first biochemical test was to preform the Urea test.…
This was allowed to be incubated for 24 hours at 35 degrees Celsius. The observation of color change and gas formation is what ultimately led to the identification of our unknown organism. Results: Dichotomous key Gram Stain: After performing the gram stain, our unknown organism appeared to be pink indicating that it is gram negative and that the morphology is rod shape or bacillus.…
Ciaccio looked over his files, researching his new clients. What he found did not impress him. Hostia Bontade was a young man who was, apparently very active in the black market. Well, at least he had quite a bit of money, as he was an heir to a powerful sicilian familia, and a lack of wits of accompany them, shown by the very obvious tracks he left behind his lawless undertakings. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “You can cheat him out of his wits,” smiled Beelze.…
The purpose of performing physiological tests is to figure out certain characteristics of microorganisms or to reach a conclusion on what an unknown microorganism is. It can be also used to determine what is needed for bacteria to be cultured in or on certain media. Culture media can either be liquid or solid, and they can be used to identify certain characteristics of different bacterial species. This is indicated by the growth or lack of growth in or on certain media. Solid media can also be used to isolate organisms and provide a means to observe their morphology (Wiley 55).…
With our usually mild winters, pest control in Frisco, TX is something we North Texans have to think about all year round. Though some pests have their own form of cold-weather hibernation, many continue to hang around bothering us from January to December. Of those pests, some are can be handled with a fly swatter or a heavy shoe but others require professional pest control in Frisco, TX. ➛ Bed bugs are tiny, flat and notoriously hard to find.…
There were multiple tiny whittish isolated colonies present, all of which showed the same growth pattern. Three colonies were chosen at random and Gram stains were performed on each (procedure for the Gram stain was used according to laboratory manual ex. 9). Each of the three Gram stains showed positive rods. After the Gram stain was determined, I began to do more research on microorganisms that had that identification and narrowing down all the possible tests to continue for identifying. Specific biochemical tests were performed.…
Usually the host is an oak or a willow, but no one can figure out exactly what causes the fungus to take…
The earth cease to amaze you everyday. In Texas, a new species was discovered in a fossil. The species name is Solastella cookei. The worm lizard belongs to a group of reptiles called amphisbaenians. The name is given to the reptile group because their “long bodies and reduced or absent limbs give them an earthworm-like appearance.”…
Epidermidis, according to Cheng she mentions how their natural environment is of course the human body and can also be created from disease. She also mentions that S. epidermidis is most common on the human skin of the human body. Bukhari explains how that with S. epidermidis is usually known for it to be a facultative anaerobe, but that is not the case since it grows best in aerobic conditions. Characteristics of S. epidermidis from Cheng, can be determined by its physical traits, such as, if it produces any kind slime that can allow it to stick on to biomaterials. She mentions also that since there are many different strands of S. epidermidis that the trait just described can definitely help classify just by looking at their slime residue.…
Cell and colony morphology have been very useful taxonomic features in the differentiation and classification of microorganisms (2). Microscopic examination allows microorganisms to be viewed under magnification, to allow cell morphology to be determined. The most common cell shapes are…
The Black Death, the bubonic plague, those are two names for the same disaster, one of the worst in recorded history, killing between 1/3 and 1/2 of the population of England, not to mention all the people killed in Asia and Africa. The name bubonic plague is a misconception, there were actually three forms of plague: the Bubonic, the Pnuemonic, and the Septicemic plagues, and they were all caused by the same germ, Yersinia Pestis. Yersinia Pestis, once called Pasteurella pestis1, "is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped coccobacillus, a facultative anaerobic organism"1. A Gram negative baterium can't be stained by crystal violet stain. This kind of bacterium has an extra, outer layer, that is made of proteins, that keeps the stain out9.…
