“Whats Love Got To Do With It”? A legendary song of the twentieth century and a well-fit slogan for the eighteenth century. Looking into the roots of our ancestors and the maltreatment of love has made me think of the recent generations definition of love and also the meaning of marriage. Today’s meaning of marriage include a deep and profound love between two people. Surprisingly it was nothing of what I had imagined. I always watched the movies where the daughter or son was basically given to the most eligible bachelor or prince and assumed it was only what the wealthy people participated in. The parents did not care if they were in love or had any desire of being with one another. Love had nothing to do with marriage and it's so hard to fathom how life would be throwing out love in today’s society meaning of marriage. Watching Professor Stephanie Coontz's lecture made me realize the life and the importance of love on multiple levels. These include the traditional and nontraditional roles of women in the families, how many traditional families actually had stepmothers, fathers, and siblings, and many other roles each member of the family had to take. The first myth I believed was that the man had always been the head of household. It was surprisingly disproven and actually the husband and wife were co-providers in the early eighteenth century. …show more content…
I thought the percentages of one-parent homes today far outweigh the percentages in the late 1800s. I didn't really take into account the amount of deaths a family had because of anything from the war to diseases and famine. It seems pretty logical why there would be single-parent homes. The reasons widely differ in why there are single-parent homes now. I believe parents just are not mentally and financially ready to be parents and leaving their spouse to raise the children
