The standard way of thinking about packaging is that it is just a wrapper around an item. Contrary to the standard way of thinking, Thomas Hine believes that packaging reflects one’s lifestyle and values. In his essay “What’s In A Package”, he explains the complicated process of creating consumer packaging, which appeals to the consumer on a subconscious level. Because of this, consumers can realize the abundance of packages, the minute details that go into them, and how packaging can make or break sales. In this essay, I will be analyzing the minor details in the packaging of Caress Body Wash: Tahitian Renewal, AXE Harmony Body Wash, EcoSmart Instant Repellent, and Prince of Peace Ginger Candy to show the importance of packaging.

For the AXE body wash, there are ridges on the sides of the bottle, in comparison to the curves that are on the women’s body wash. This could be seen as how society view men are to be strong, or how a man’s abdomen is supposed to be rigid and chiseled. On the other hand, the curves on the women’s body wash shows how society views women to be curvy and sexy. In addition, both scents are made to attract the opposite gender and smell pleasing. The feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation are also two commonalities in the way both products want their customers to feel when using their product. The goal of both of their packaging was to radiate masculinity and feminism when on the shelf of any …show more content…
Although EcoSmart Organic Insect Repellant’s packaging on the surface does not seem very interesting, small messages are hidden within the packages that makes the product more exuberant. The packaging of the bottle is fairly basic and uses “earthy” colors such as blue and green. Blue and green are two common colors that are associated with nature and being environmentally friendly. This insect repellent helps customers survive by keeping away various types of bugs, such as mosquitos, ticks, and gnats. It doesn’t just tackle one type of insect, so it is very convenient. The product is also made from organic plant oils, making the item more unique since it is less toxic. On the bottle, there is a photo of a family showing how the insect repellent is perfect for both men and women and that this product is safe for the

Women and men have always been depicted differently throughout the years, it seems certain stereotypes of femininity and masculinity will always play an underlying role in why advertisements for gender-specific products are displayed and targeted towards viewers the way that they are. This is particularly true when looking at magazines. Society is constantly being reminded of the fact that the images shown to them in magazines are being altered and enhanced in order to highlight natural qualities of both the male and female genders. Women are made to look thinner in some areas while curvier in other areas, and men are made to look bulkier and more muscular in comparison to the women. But besides the obvious physical changes that magazine editors make to pictures in their…

Packages are more than just cleverly planned marketing schemes to sell products but rather an alternative way for people to express themselves, their culture, and their pursuits to individuality. This statement correlates to the primary basis of Thomas Hine’s article, “What’s in a Package”. Throughout his work of literature, Thomas argues that packages function more than the protection of an item and are actively competing for the attention of the consumer every day in their battlefield, the marketplace. For instance, these packages are precisely designed to appeal to human emotions and sell a valuable attribution that parallels to that individual's personal characteristics. In fact, nearly every little thing of a package is carefully planned…
