Therefore, decalcification seen around the orthodontic brackets and bands, in the form of white spot lesions, is a negative treatment sequelae seen in more than 50% of orthodontic patients.1 Streptococcus mutans is prime bacteria commonly associated with enamel demineralization followed by lactobacilli in the oral cavity.2,3

There are two kinds of bone cements for orthopaedic procedures, conventional cement (PMMA) and bioasorbable composites. Cement augmentation is a very useful technique for fixation of implants such as screws, plates, or IMnails in osteoporotic bone. Generally, cement augmentation features increased strength of implant fixation, rapid restoration of patient mobility, and reduction of the complications of implant failures. The occurrence of severe skeletal loss requires the stability provided by polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). In a biomechanical study which investigated the treatment of osteoporotic trochanteric patients, femurs which had the lowest bone density showed a significant improvement in the initial fixation stability and total displacement of the femoral head was reduced by 39% on average in the group with the modified sliding hip screw (SHS) and PMMA compared to the standard SHS group (6).…

Secondary endodontic infections are when there is re-infection of the root canal system after endodontic treatment. These newly introduced microbes were not part of the previous infection and may have entered the root canal system through recurrent caries, exposed dentinal tubules or open marginal restorations. Unlike biofilms of primary endodontic infections which are polymicrobial, the bacteria causing persistent and secondary endodontic infections are usually composed of one or few species. It is thought that facultative bacteria are more resistant than obligate anaerobes and that gram-positive bacteria are more resistant than gram-negative bacteria(7). These microbes are usually gram positive and regularly include Enterococcus faecalis, Propionibacterium spp, Lactobacillus spp, Streptococcus spp, and Actinomyces spp (4).…

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been the most frequently used irrigant in endodontic therapy. Your properties include antimicrobial effect and tissue dissolution capacity (Estrela). However, some accidents can happen due NaOCl extrusion to the buccal tissues. Extrusion of NaOCL may occur because of extreme pression of irrigation solution, widening of the apical foramen, incorrect working length, areas of external resorption or root perforations (references). Sodium hypochlorite is caustic to the cancellous bone, degrading the organic matrix, (Kerbl, 2012) and to the soft tissues causing cell injury in endothelial cells and fibroblasts and ulcerations (Gatot,…

faecalis is known to have a high resistance to antibacterial substances and is therefore often detected in non resolving apical lesions or retreatment cases6. Eliminating the residual micro-organisms within the biofilm in the complex root canal system is a challenging task. The antibacterial activity of different intracanal dressings were tested in the present study and E. faecalis was selected as the prime endodontic microorganism. The results of the study indicates that intracanal medicaments alone have little quantitative effect on the viability of E. faecalis.…
