What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was an emotional tale that both filled and broke my heart. Countertransference effects my view of the family. The relationship between Gilbert and Arnie is too similar to mine with my son. Additionally, Bonnie flooded me with emotions because she was reminiscent of a family member I was the primary care provider for. Enmeshment was the first words that come to mind when describing the Grape family. Gilbert is a hero, but I also see some hero qualities in the older sister. The dominant story seems to be the theme I never wanted to be a joke communicating that appearances are important and we should feel shame if we don’t keep them up.
Becky had an amazing way to rephrase situations. Her ability to be respectful and non-blaming is inspiring.
