The College Today wrote, “There’s one certainty when it comes to Youth Development Programs that aim to place kids on the path to college: A HOOK. This is especially true for underprivileged children who may not see a college education in their future. Before you can expose them to what college is, what it is not and how it can change their lives, you must first capture their attention. For Chucktown Squash that hook is the sport of squash.” The kids really love being a part of a unique team and traveling to matches so they work hard and give 100% no matter what they are doing. The daily practices are usually consistent and predictable, and because of this the students are expected work hard on the court as well as in the classroom. Over the past 3 years, academic averages increased 6 grade points, 86% to 92%. Math scores also increased 8 grade points, 84% to 92%, and social studies scores increased 7 grade points, 85% to 92%. So, according to report conducted in 2013-2014, students that participated in Chucktown Squash improved their score in several subjects. One Chucktown Squash parent said, “Remember, when they have practice, they have academics right after. It did help academically because it wasn’t all about squash. IT was about squash and still learning. They don’t focus so much on the sport, letting you know they still you education to get somewhere.
