Easy access to firearms is an increasingly serious threat to U.S. public safety and will remain so in the future if gun control is not a main concern for the federal government. The current loose regulation of guns is not enough to protect Americans citizens, as evidenced by the increase in gun related crimes in the United States. Congress should promptly approve President Obama’s proposal for a new assault weapons ban and a more stringent system of background checks for gun purchasers. The laws of nature are rule put in place to promote peace in society. Hobbes states, “A LAW OF NATURE, is a precept, or general rule, found out by reason, by which a man is forbidden to do, that, which is destructive of his life or taketh away the means of preserving the same; and to omit, that by which he thinketh it may be best preserved” (Hobbes 86). According to Hobbes, the three essential laws of nature are: first, a man should seek peace, but if he does not find it he may defend himself; second, a man must be willing to give up his natural right to do anything he wants, knowing that the freedoms of others will also be limited; third, a man must obey the previous laws, but he cannot transfer the right to defend himself (Hobbes 86-86). Pro-gunners may believe they are following the laws of nature because they are trying to defend themselves, however they must realize there are alternatives to buying guns. First, instead of stocking up on guns for “protection” Americans should understand that many shootings happen when peace was an option. The constant threat of large or small gun crimes has increased public worry about safety. This regression to insecurity is similar to Hobbes state of nature. Fortunately, for the American public, they have entered a common wealth and in this common wealth there is an appointed sovereign to ensure their safety. The power of the President of the United State is to make policies for the protection of his citizens and punish those who violate them. Now is the time for the POTUS to put in place stricter gun control laws. There have been gun control policies put in place by past administrations in the American government, it is vital that the current administration works to further regulate gun use.
