What’s eating Gilbert Grape is a very simple yet meaningful movie. There is no clear cut message that points out the faults of society and it may be hard to interpret a message because the movie is set around everyday life. However the one thing that is clear, is what
Gilbert realizes throughout the movie. His life is going nowhere and he must break the everyday routine. Gilbert sees through the people he calls his friends, and notices their subtle influences and impacts within his decisions of his life. In the small town of Endora, Iowa, Gilbert Grape is busy caring for Arnie, his brother with a developmental disability. His mother, Bonnie, gave up on life after her husband hanged himself in the basement 14 years earlier. She spends almost all of her time on the couch watching TV and eating. With Bonnie unable to care for her children on her own due to her morbid obesity, Gilbert has taken responsibility for repairing the old house and looking after Arnie. Gilbert Grape works as a stock clerk at Lamson’s Grocery, the local grocery store, which has become unpopular since a large chain store, “Foodland”, opened near by. Gilbert Grape acts as the male head of his family as his father is dead which leaves him as the main caregiver for Arnie, his younger brother, who is unable to care for himself.
