There is no one to blame but yourself from overeating, not exercising, eating unhealthy food, and being obese. People look for someone to blame for there problems because that is the kind of society we live in. Balko expresses, “Your well-being, shape, and condition have increasingly been deemed matters of “public health” instead of matters of personal responsibility” (467). We learn from our parents and grand parents how to cook, some of the stuff we learn how to cook is unhealthy. In all reality it is your choice what you buy at the grocery store and what you put in your mouth, hence why you should be held responsible and not the government. The government doesn’t force you to buy unhealthy fating foods our society influents us, but its still your choice what you put into your body. For example, look at all the commercials for fast food restaurants. Once again no one forces you to go through the drive through of a fast food joint, one chooses to make the decision. Taking responsibility of one’s health and choosing to live and eat healthy not only will it benefit you it will also benefit your loved ones. Without a doubt there is a major problem with obesity in America. As one can see people aren’t concerned about there health until they have to foot the medical bills. Balko states, “If the government is paying for my anti-cholesterol medication, what incentive is there for me to put down the cheeseburger?” (467). Because of the new healthcare laws that were passed, requires insurers to give healthcare to people regardless of pre-existing, or even self-inflicted medical conditions, we have completely taken the responsibility for the costs of individual choices out of the hands of the individuals. How un-American it is that I should be forced to pay for someone who chooses to be obese, while I make choices to keep myself
