A higher education is something that should be affordable to anyone with the willpower to further their education. It is unfortunate that, in order to make a decent living, one must first go into debt. The reason numerous people do not pursue a college education is the lack of funds to pay for the costly tuition. According to the article "Why Does College Cost So Much?" published in CNN Opinion, "In 2009, spending by Americans for post-secondary education totaled $461 billion, an amount 42% greater than in 2000, after accounting for inflation" (Vedder). Nelson Mandela once said that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Shouldn 't an education be available to any person who wishes to obtain one? Education is self-bettering and is such a beautiful thing to pursue. It is a prized possession that, sadly, many people are able to obtain. That is appalling. Growing knowledge can be a never-ending thirst. Someone once told me that if I thought I knew it all, then I knew nothing. One is never finished learning. Those who are intelligent enough to realize this should be able to further their learning easily and affordably. According to the article, "College Tuition Is Too High":

I have several solutions that will make college more easily affordable to students without lowering costs as a whole, although, that would be the ideal solution. The first solution would be to include the cost of books in tuition. If we are paying 500 dollars for a course, we shouldn 't be required to drop another hundred or so on books, especially since they 're rarely used in most classes. We shouldn 't be forced to pay a significant amount of extra money for something we barely utilize. "Somewhere between one half and two thirds of undergrads now come out of school with debt" (McArdle). Let 's fix that. Another compromise would be to offer a reward system. Higher grades should equal discounted tuition. If a student obtains a GPA of a 3.5 or higher, then the following semester should be 25% less expensive. If a student receives a GPA of a 4.0, the subsequent semester should be 50% off. Of course, these percentages are just suggestions, but the point remains the same. College is worth the cost, but if it were less pricy, we would have a significantly larger student body. Perfect attendance deserves a reduction in tuition as well. In the real world, you must show up to work to get paid and if attendance were rewarded, it would build a better foundation for life after college. We could also offer self- learned degrees.
