After reading the primary documents in Chapter Two of Major Problems in the Civil War and Reconstruction readers can observe the ongoing debate just before the civil war tore apart the nation. The debate simplified, comes down to the North and South claiming that their lifestyle and culture is superior to the others. The North chastises the South for upholding the cruel and barbaric practice of enslaving other men. While the South defends itself by reflecting on the general peace and ease of life found in the Southern States. In these documents the debate boils down to each side defending their lifestyle and culture while calling into the question the culture and lifestyle of their neighbours. The North is superior in navigation, commerce and manufacturing, and much to the chagrin of the South as Hinton Rowan Helper writes in Document 2 the North is also superior when it comes to agriculture. The South is “far behind the free States in the only thing of which she has ever dared to boast- agriculture.” Helper goes on to give some statistics that show that the north produces $45,782,636 more in agriculture than the South does. The South responds to this again by citing their ease of life compared to that of their Northern neighbours. What use is an advantage in these fields when it makes life full of hardships?
