There are multiple causes that sparked the beginning of the First World War. The main four are considered to be: militarism, alliances, nationalism, and imperialism. WWI was a direct result of these causes, but the murder of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife initiated the beginning of the war. World War I took place between July 1914 and November 11, 1918. At the end of the war over 17 million people were killed including over 100,000 American troops. Militarism is a system that places great importance on military power. It was a cause of the war because it was an ‘Arms Race’ with Britain, France, and Germany competing to build larger, stronger armies and navies. Militarism affected not only policy, but also shaped culture and the media/public’s opinion. This alone was not the cause of the war, but it established an environment where war, rather than cooperation or thought was the best of way.

This was another cause of the war because it forced many countries into conflict although they were not originally affected. As more and more alliances became involved, alliances of those alliances became involved; the war grew to incorporate the whole world. Nationalism was another thing that took part in he spark of the war. Nationalism is an elaborate form of patriotism and loyalty of ones country. The media in every state involved in the war promoted the arrogance spurred by this.
