At the end of World War II Korea was divided into two halves: the North and South. In 1950 the Korean Peninsula was the center of dispute between the Soviet Union and the U.S. The Russians occupied northern Korea and the Americans occupied the south. This was not simply a border conflict but instead something much larger. The U.S. feared it was a communist campaign to take control of the globe. For this reason, the country sent in troops to ensure that the opposition would not have the ability to rule over Korea as a whole. The Korean war started out with the south as the defensive force, which was unfavorable for the U.S. and the president. During the year of 1951, American leader President Truman started discussions with the Russians (History.com).
