Even though there is many varieties of types of marriages not one is the “correct” form. This is because there is not one set type of marriage. Each couple’s marriage in the story is different but that does not mean the marriage will fail. Terri and Mel have been together for five years, yet their marriage is very different then Laura and Nick’s and still has been successful thus far. Since there is not a set definition of love and everyone has different expectations for it, this makes marriage complicated. Not every couple is going to agree on what is expected in their relationship and this will lead to opinions clashing. Difference in opinions will not break the marriage as long as the couple finds a happy medium of each other’s expectations. Mel and Terri have proven to find this happy medium since their definitions of love were so different and still were able to be happy together for five years. As shown in the story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” love is nothing but simple, everyone has their own perspectives and expectations of what should come out of love. Each character has had their own experiences that shaped their mindset. There is no set rule on how love should be it is different for everyone. With love being so different to each person marriage is proven to be complicated. Not every couple will agree and they have to compromise. Love in general is complicated as Mel says, “What do any of us really know about love. It seems we’re just beginners at love”
