What Was The Purpose Of Jonah In The Book Of Jonah

Improved Essays
In conclusion, Jonah is summed up in these four headings: Jonah flees from God (conceals His message), Jonah prays (made humble), Jonah travels to the city of Nineveh (message of annihilation), and Jonah’s anger at the Lord’s compassion (“God is more concerned with saving souls"). (Goos) The book of Jonah has no stated author, but the most logical or sensible choice would be “Jonah,” ("Jonah." Intro to. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Nov. 2014.) despite Jonah being referred to in the third person in the story. Jonah was written during a period of time after the Babylonian Exile of Israel (the 2nd exile). This stage in time can be titled the age of Jewish exclusivity. Jonah inherited traits and beliefs from this age. The purpose of Jonah depends on the nature of the book and on the person’s individual exegesis. …show more content…
Jonah was commanded to go and preach to Nineveh; the capital of Assyria. Assyria was the lone empire to “repent after hearing God’s warning and Jonah was the one prophet to hide God’s warning message,” (Flurry) meaning God was going to use Assyria in the future to discipline His child, Israel, for being disobedient. This disciplinary event happened after Tiglath-pileser III seized Assyria and followed up with a campaign of expansion. Jonah precisely took place in the period of Assyrian instability between the “death of Adad-nirari III and the seizing of the Assyrian throne by Tiglath-pileser III.” (Gaebelein, Jonah Section) There is clear historical evidence of this fact. This was a sensitive time for Nineveh; the people realized they could be taken over soon. Their willingness to believe Jonah’s message is

The downfall of Judah was a complex and lengthy political ordeal documented over several books of the Old Testament. Two prophets who give their own detailed reasoning for this downfall are Ezekiel and Jeremiah. Both prophets lived during a tumultuous transitionary period of Judah’s history during which Babylon began a systematic deportation and exile of Judah’s citizens. Where the prophets differ, however, is in their message to the elite of Judah in its waning days and their eventual exile. One main point of difference between the prophets was their interpretation of reasoning for the fall of Judah.…

The narrator of this book is named Jonah, which is odd because the name comes from the bible, from the story of Jonah and the whale. As mentioned Jonah was once a Christian but converted to a Bokononist. “ I would have been a Bokononist then, if there had been anyone to teach me the bittersweet lies of Bokonon.” (Vonnegut 2). He sometimes feels that God is trying to control him.…

They taught him all the things they know, so he was influenced by them so his views on the world, his actions, ideas, etc. were shaped by their teachings. These ideas that kids like Elias grew up with majorly affected how they lived their life, most likely one of crime, which possibly lead to life in jail. No one stopped them from doing drugs, no one stopped them from killing, no one stopped them for stealing, no one stopped them for anything. Most of their lives turned out this way because the kids did not have a positive role model to help and nurture them when they were young. The parents there were just teaching their kids how to survive and to do well, most likely sharing with them some of the knowledge that they were given by their…

While in this room, Johan is stripped, strapped to the table, and brutally examined/used by doctors. Not only is Jonah forced to surrender parts of his body, but he finds the doctor’s needles to remove pieces of his soul, his stories, and “pieces of [his] vocabulary” (115). At the end of this process, one of the doctors states that Johan is “doing a brave thing” (115) and “saving the world’ (115). When looking back at this portion of the text, the doctor’s claims that Jonah is “saving the world” (115) indicates that Jonah’s body is unwillingly being sacrificed for the betterment of the white people within the…

The Babylonian exile was after the destruction of the first temple. The temple symbolizes three major aspects of the Jewish people. It first is viewed as where God dwells on Earth, second as a symbol to pray towards, and third where heaven meets earth. After its destruction, it was a lost period of the Jewish people. The other two slates from Deuteronomy discuss the Jews agreement to the land with God.…

The book has a psalm within itself to bring a new level of sadness with Jonah being in the whale. Literary aspects put Jonah in theses aspects especially the ones that need to look more deeply into Jonah such as it being possibly an analogy for justice versus mercy and God and his relationship with all people (Trible, 1994, p 484). Jonah being a narrative shows him and God as the main protagonist while everybody else except for the Nineties as minor characters (Trible, 1994, p. 474). There are instances of irony such as Jonah expressing God is the creator of land and sea while he is fleeing from God on the sea (Walton, 2006, p. 476). The plethora of literary details and techniques do not make up for the lack of historical context ,but elevates the story to being what it was intended to be great literature that gives emphasis on the Lord and his…

However, four years later, the Assyrian army attacked and destroyed all of Judah except Jerusalem—just as Isaiah prophesied in chapter 37. The people saw God's intervention in the survival of Jerusalem and rejoiced, but soon became overly confident in more ways than one. Judah's arrogance eventually gave way to the Babylonian captivity, in which most of its citizens were deported to Babylon. This is the prophetic setting of the second section of the book of Isaiah. Boadt states that “Second Isaiah clearly refers to the capture and destruction of Jerusalem as a past event and to the present state of the people as exiles in Babylon.…

The book of Jonah, just like the other Minor Prophets, is a short story – only 4 chapters with 48 vesicles – which, between other characteristics, its distinguishes by having the prophet as the main character, while the other prophets are only collections of oracles. Another difference with the other minor prophet books, is that the book of Jonah is a narrative story about the mission ordered to Jonah, and, even in other books of the Bible, we find parallel writings of this particular style, none of them is as dominating as this. The most distinguished of its characteristics is that, while most of the prophetic books in the Bible the narrator is the prophet (redacted on first person), the book of Jonah is narrated by a third person. This book…
