My Decision To Join A Sorority

What was your opinion on Greek Life before you joined your sorority?
I thought Greek Life was very fake. The girls seemed to want to be trophy wives, etc. The picture I got was a lot of drinking, hazing, and mean girls.
What made you decide to join a sorority?
Part of me had always wondered if the stereotype was true, and a lot of my friends from high school were now sorority women. When I met some of the girls who are now my sisters, I really enjoyed talking to them. They made me feel like not all sorority girls were bitchy, etc.
When did you rush your sorority and how was the process?
I rushed fall 2014 during informal recruitment. My new member process was an in-depth learning experience. We take a great deal of time to discuss our history, purpose, values, policies and other important information.
How was your time as a pledge? Is it as bad as movies and the media portray it?
We don’t call it pledge/pledging. My time as a new member was wonderful. My sisters were very accepting and kind. They tried to always make us feel included. Our sorority was the first to come up with an anti-hazing policy, so not it was nothing like the movies. We were constantly loved and included in everything. Sisters were inviting us to dinner, study sessions, and to hang out all the time.

The media will portray anything it can in a negative light in order to gain ratings. However, some bad apples are in the bunch. Some people haze, encourage bad behavior, incite racism, etc. They cast a bad light on all chapters. Other chapters raise large sums of money for charity, get involved in all kinds of community service, have great brotherhood/sisterhood connections, and do all around good things. It is hard to see those things in light of negative scandals that make headlines. No one cares that you raised thousands for ALS or Autism when another chapter with your letters is in the news for hazing, rape, drinking,

Christmas is a time full of beautiful decorations that cover houses with lights, wreaths, and tacky Santa Clauses. It seems nowadays everyone decorates for the holiday season, even universities Greek life. One night last year during holiday season, a member of Alpha Delta Pi decided to play a practical joke on the fraternity boys who were trying to be festive. A group of girls decided to sneak out late, and steal a Christmas reef. A harmless prank that was supposed to be nothing more than funny.…

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is an organization that I wanted to be a part of. When I first had an encounter with the women of this organization I saw how nice they all were, and I mean genuinely nice. That in itself showed me that the women in the organization are people that I could see myself being around for the rest of my life. They exemplified the kind of sisterhood that I would want to be affiliated with.…

Looking back now, there really is no better advice to give someone. The rush process has been perfected over decades of use; everyone ends up in the house they are meant to be in. Formal rush is an effective and quick way for members to have contact with all the potential new members, and streamlines how sororities recruit new pledge classes. As the viewpoints of the members evolve and change, the new pledge classes represent that. The process doesn’t work when it isn’t followed correctly, such as when alumnae step in and make decisions meant for the current members.…

According to “Here’s Looking at You: Self-Objection, Body Image Disturbance, and Sorority Rush” author Ashley Marie Rolnik, Renee Englen-Maddox & Steven A. Miller, “sorority members have been described as having a preoccupation with body image appearance and may be more at risk for eating disorders/eating disordered behavior than non-members” (Maddox, Miller & Rolnik 8). The form of initiation of rush week in order to be accepted among the group is a barbarous way and should be looked over and change in way that will boost a student’s confidence instead of having them second guess of who they…

Greeks all speak a language or a lexis that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority. We sometimes say things that only other Greeks will understand. In addition to the lexis that is shared, they also have different levels of seniority and the Phi, and epsilon) sigma being the beginner and epsilon being the highest seniority. I think this group values the sisterhood/ brother hood bonds that they get out of it. We as greeks love the feeling of meeting new people and being able to connect with them as close as they would with a sibling.…

Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…

I am a first-generation college student, before I enrolled at NAU no one in my family had ever gone to a university. That fall, when I decided to go through Formal Recruitment and join a sorority my family thought it would be a mistake and did not approve. They had no idea how lost I felt or how confused and frustrated I had become, trying to navigate all of the problems or issues that come with being in college without any advice or shared experiences with my family. I found a safe place in Fraternity and Sorority Life I found mentors and I figured out who I wanted to become. In the Fall of 2012 it would have been impossible for myself or my family to know how much college and sorority life would shape who I am today.…
