In the article ”the living wasn 't easy” by Cheri Paris Edwards, Edwards talk about Wests novel and her life. Specifically, who each character represents, the main character Cleo represents her mother Rachel, who married the real “black banana king” named Isaac West, her father. Wests father always mentioned Dorothy as her “father 's daughter”(Edwards,13) meaning; she was very into working a business and getting praised for it “with a sense of entitlement”(Edwards, 14). Although, West’s father was wealthy her mother was the “granddaughter of slaves”(Edwards, 14) but, West considers her family to be “genteel poor” according to Edwards article. When Avey goes on a cruise with her best friends, she does not think so much about it. All Avey feels is just to get away on a relaxing cruise. Little by little she starts to realize how uncomfortable she is while eating dinner in the huge ballroom with everyone on the boat. Aveys uncomfortableness sends her on a hunt to find her true identity and self-love that Avey needed all along. She goes from place to place to fit finally in with the staff and crew at a hotel where she had stayed. Also, on the way there bonded with the taxi cab driver over the fantastic music that made her smile with comfort. While she did not struggle with money, Avey used her money to get on this journey and find herself making her appreciate life
