Slaves were typically an African descent who were not paid for their work and they had to do everything demanded by the one person who owned them. They had no rights and little protection from cruel treatment and inhumane living conditions. Slaves of course weren’t allowed to marry and children were very frequently sold away from their parents. In the book, “Chains,” it states, “ I also have been whipped many a time on my naked skin, and sometime till the blood has run down over my waistband; but the greatest grief I then had was to see them whip my mother, and to hear her, on her knees, begging for mercy.” (pg. 146.) This strongly shows that the African slaves weren’t treated with respect.…

Slaves were punished outrageously for doing everyday tasks such as reading, writing, or attempting to leave their property. Yet, southern slaveholders argue against all points made against them to attempt to persuade and protect their economy. Southern slaveholders argued that slave life was far better than factory work in the north by stating slaves hardly worked and had many breaks. They also stated that the northern factory workers were mistreated and worked in harsh conditions. The majority of the depictions and facts stated by the southern slaveholders are false and is unjustified for comparing factory life to slavery.…

Slaves in the 1800s were treated not as people, but as property. They would use them to help cultivate cotton in the plantations. The slaves were given enough food to keep them alive and working and shelter that was nothing beyond a shack next to the plantations. There would be slave trades or auctions out in public. They would trade slaves from plantation to plantation just as you would with cattle.…

America, the land of the free, yet many innocent African Americans were seen as inferior beings and were therefore made slaves and were put to work in plantations in the slaveholding South. Even after aiding in the American Revolution, the majority of African Americans were denied of this so called freedom as well as their natural rights. Since conditions in the North and the South were very different, their usage of slaves differed. The North had no use of slaves due to the lack of farming because of the cold climate. The South however, saw a huge use of slaves since the farming conditions were better than the North, therefore having a high demand of slaves to work in plantations.…

We 're fortunate to be living in a period where everybody has the right to speak freely and is dealt with just as, but in the past that was not the case for slaves. Slavery started in the 16th century and spread throughout North America by the 17th and 18th century. Essentially, Europeans used slavery to dehumanize people that were under the social status line. Many slaves endured a horrific life whether it was working in extreme labor or being abused physically and verbally. The memoirs of slaves such as Tom Elice shows us personal experiences of the slaves that were able to escape and start over successfully which gives us something to be hopeful for in the future.…

During this time, diseases ravaged both the North and the South, however, the South seemed to get the worst of it. The South would have cases of malaria, yellow fever, cholera, bilious remittent fever, autumnal fever, tibircuois and respiratory diseases. It was common for breakouts of these illnesses, although some plagues seemed to affect one race worse than the other. Yellow fever tended to affect whites with European heritage while cholera affected both free blacks and enslaved blacks.…

Destruction of the Myth of Any “Good” in Slavery Slavery in the Antebellum US was a corrupt institution that tarnished nearly every aspect of life for every American before the war and the effects of which are still affecting American society, even in the 21st century. These effects include, but are not limited to: the myths that prevail, even today, of the “good” slaveholders and the “good”white southerners who were poor or did not own slaves. The meaning of “good” in this context is that these white southerners were more likely to treat slaves and other non-white people like humans. Obviously, treating people as humans when they were enslaved would have meant the freeing of every slave and an active career in abolitionism. None of the myths…
