What The Phrase 'Taking Ownership Of Your Learning' Means To You

Decent Essays
Explain what the phrase “taking ownership of your learning” means to you.
Like dieting and weight control, there is not a single element that is going to put in control of your own education. Motivation is a tricky process. Personally, taking ownership of your learning means you are motivated to learn and as a consequence you take the necessary actions for learning to happen. It could be a language, a skill or a profession but at the end it has to be a clear purpose of personal joy. Taking ownership means it has to be a goal, but not a timeframe.

When the adult student is presented with the unknown, they tend to draw back and feel inadequate. They are encouraged from the start of the course to ask questions and not to be ashamed when they are not able to perform an assignment on the first try. They are given the opportunity to celebrate their success when they accomplish the task with their other classmates; thus, they are encouraged to continue to the next task. They control how long it takes them to complete a task; subsequently, this helps the student to effectively attribute their success to their capability, effort and knowledge (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). Attitude sets the stage for both the educator and adult students to attain their learning goals; therefore, it is vital that each course taught motivates the students to reach for the next level.…

“The teacher is key to student motivation. We have immense power to unleash—or diminish—a young person’s desire to learn,” says Carol Ann Tomlinson in her article, "One To Grow On /Releasing The Will To Learn.” Carol Ann Tomlinson is a successful author, a professor and also chairs the Educational Leadership, Foundation, and Policy at the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. One of the most important aspects of motivating students, according to Tomlinson, is the student’s perception of whether they are not only seen as an individual in the classroom, but also seen as being able to succeed in the classroom.…

Out of all 5 of my talents, Learner describes me the best. As cliché as it may sound, I really have a passion for learning. But my passion for learning extends far past just the usual sitting in class taking notes, or the usual memorization of subjects, instead it really reaches out to deeper depths where I really seek to master everything that is put into my head. I am not okay with only touching base on subjects or barely treading the surface of topics, rather I have to really dive into the text and pay close attention to all the details in order for me to grasp what is going on.…

Essay #2 Author Daniel H. Pink wrote a book about motivation and how it plays a big part in people’s lives called Drive. In Pink’s argument he assumes that carrots and sticks don’t work anymore; we have the innate psychological need for autonomy, mastery and purpose (Motivation 3.0). I feel like in my life motivation plays a huge role, to some people all they need is motivation to help them get through things, for others they just want to feel motivation. Academically I think Motivation 3.0 strategically helps me in my education in order to reach my future career.…

Before this class began I expected this class to show me the ins and outs of being a successful college student. My assumptions were very valid, because every assignment we have worked on has had something to do with being a successful college student. Before taking this course I was not knowledgeable about many resources I have at Cedar Valley. In this course I had to figure out things by myself and take responsibility as a college student. I had to stay on top of my assignments because nobody else would be checking for me.…

Responsibility over your education Claiming an education is easier said than done and as you grow older you begin to realize how responsible you are over your own education. In Adrienne Rich’s essay, “Claiming an Education,” she makes an argument about responsibility for all students. In her opinion it is important, within the educational community, to truly take control over our own education. That is to say, you as a student has to be engage with what is being taught to you. Rich states, “Being here to receive an education; you will do much better to think of yourselves as being here to claim one.”…

Topic I decided to research student motivation for my topic for this assignment. I am a program director and teacher of polysomnography at a private career college in Michigan. It seems over the last year that my students’ motivation to learn has declined. The excitement and enthusiasm did not exist with my 2015 cohort as compared to my 2014 cohort. My personal areas of weakness in being a self-motivated and engaged student are as follows: Firstly I have seldom had to do any work at school since my intelligence means that I grasped concepts very quickly and was able to achieve a passing mark without any effort, this means that my self-motivation quickly slips when the subject is one in which I have no interest.…

As the principal of Crestview Elementary, I am proud to acknowledge the growth our school has shown in my three years as principal. We have implemented several strategies that have led to an increase in our scores on state standardized assessments. As the instructional leader, I am continually assessing the school processes and searching for possible ways to improve. After examining the school academic, discipline, and walk-through data, I have concluded that one area that needs to be improved upon is student engagement. The school’s academic data shows certain subgroups of students that continue to fall behind academically; the discipline data shows that our low performing students have a high number of discipline referrals, and our walk-through…
