When I worked on my Eagle project, I had to communicate between my troop, the homeless shelter I was working for, the people I was buying supplies from, and the people who were helping me raise funds. I had never built a patio or barbeque area, nor had I refurbished a bench before, so I took careful notes from both a contractor and a handyman to ensure I did it right. To get the project approved, I wrote a 14-page proposal, and then raised $1000. Then, due to an irremovable deadline, I ended up doing the project the same week as my SAT and all three of my AP tests. It was one of the most mentally and emotionally draining challenges I had in my life, and not everything went smoothly.…
The next turning point would another misfortune, and my mother was hit by a car crossing the street from her place of employment in the parking lot at Laredo Texas. My mother was in critical condition, and the car that hit her fractured her ribs, pierced her lung, and she broke her own teeth. I have a younger brother who lives in Atlanta, Georgia; nevertheless, one of us was required to move back to Laredo, Texas. I decided it would be myself; consequently, my mother has always been my rock, so now it was my turn. My brother, David was working on two Masters, and it was the rational decision.…
Language barrier. The difficulty of having an immigrant parent is the language barrier. My mother had to struggle when transitioning from Spanish to English. Being raised in a Spanish speaking home and attending an English speaking school was tough. I soon gave up on Spanish because I needed to translate for my mother in everyday life.…
My eyes always lit up when I walked into her house. It always smelled of fresh tasteful food. From her short curly brown hair, small frame, graying eyes with blue eye shadow on her lid making them pop, to her caring and loving personality always made me memorize her beauty growing up. We were both growing older, but for some reason she was ageing faster. Lupe helped my mom and dad raise me when I needed someone to care for me while they were at work trying to make enough to support four growing girls.…
I went to a private, jewish elementary school. There were about 40 kids in my grade, and we were all white. The school raised us to believe in God, and only the jewish religion. No one really questioned it, because it was the only way of living we knew. Everything was perfect for every family, except for mine.…
There have been many deaths and adversities in my life, however, none affected me like the death of my cousin’s baby and my current home situation. In 2012, my cousin’s baby Eben died. He was only four months old and died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). I have always been told everything happens for a reason, but there is no reason that the life of an innocent baby should be taken away so young.…
1. Why did you choose the event you did? I choose the remembered event of my Brother’s death because it is by far the most explicitly vivid image in my mind. I also found that putting my thoughts on paper was some way therapeutic to what I have been carrying around for the last 15 years.…

One of the most challenging things I have gone through was getting knee surgery earlier this past year. It was a frightening time for both myself and my loved ones. The procedure itself is what I initially feared. I knew the road to recovery would not be an easy one, but I would have never imagined the recovery process would be so emotionally and physically draining. During my sophomore and junior year, I began going to the YMCA nearly everyday with my close friend, CJ.…
In 1996, after my husband almost took my life, I finally left that relationship and put 1800 miles between us. I began to write a book before relocating, and I believed my book published long before now. But, fate had different plans for me. I had to put my work on hold to work on my healing, and deal with the issues that landed on my doorstep.…
Background Story I grew up in a city roughly halfway between Seattle and Tacoma where much of the population is toward the low socioeconomic standing. Spending grades K-12 in the public school district that was not the worst, but certainly not the best. Learning has always come naturally, so I was never pressured to give my education much (if any) thought until the summer before starting my sophomore year of high school. The next few years were the most agonizing and the influential of my life. A turbulent divorce left my mom working two jobs and forced an involuntary maturation process.…
