Should Students Get Jobs During College?
Due to the economic crisis in recent years, college students have to face college costs that continue to rise, so more students may find it necessary to work while enrolled in school. The need to work has risen sharply in recent years, especially in colleges and universities of America. Almost all students have part-time jobs. Before discussing the benefit of part-time jobs for college students, there are several true things students should know before working. According to the U.S. Department of Education, over 78% of undergraduate students work, a figure that’s been steady since the 1990s. On average, working students hold down jobs for 30 hours per week (Dumbauld). The next is 25% of full-time students also work full time (Dumbauld). When working full time, college students do not have more time to spend with their families, vacations and socializing. According to College Board, almost students have to pay high tuition fees at colleges and universities at the present. For example, the average Texas Tech student will pay $23,333 for the year to live on campus and $14,928 to live off campus. This tuition fee is high for students and their parents, so the best solution for them is part-time jobs. The college students can relieve the financial burden of their parents (Hall, 2010), control daily expense and deal with the said high cost of college when they work. On the other hand, learning on budget in college is a very useful skill because if students are not careful, their bank accounts will be zero very quickly.
