John and Absalom believe in God, but Nicholas believes that astrology can tell you about what is going to happen. It seems that because Nicholas does not believe in God he makes up lies to get what he wants. He tells John that he has gotten information from his astrology when he says, “You must upon your true faith swear, right her, that to no man will you this word betray; for it is Christ’s own word that I will say, and if you tell a man, you’re ruined quite;” (Chaucer 105). As the story continues Nicholas tells John that there is going to be a flood so he should build an ark for all of them to be saved. John ends up believing Nicholas and sinning because he believed in a person's word above God’s word. Nicholas isn’t the only one who wants to have an affair with John’s wife because Absalom does too. Absalom loves John’s wife so much, that he is willing to have an affair with her. This shows that Absalom is a hypocrite because he is thought to be a true Christian but does sinful things. The whole point to tricking him was so Nicholas could have an affair with John’s wife. Nicholas doesn’t see how it is wrong because he doesn’t believe in God’s word and thinks he can do whatever he
