The Crucible Essay
The role of guilt in The Crucible is to show why certain characters did what they did. For example, John Proctor cheated on his wife, making him feel guilty. He feels as though he has lost his relationship with god and wants to gain it back. Throughout the story John struggles with his own self and grows as a person as well as his relationship with Emily, and wants to start being a better husband, but it’s hard for him to move on when his wife, Emily Proctor, brings up his past mistake all the time. It starts to cause complications in the relationship, not to mention the problems Abigail causes as well. We can learn from the way the characters respond to their guilt, that we should try to learn from our mistakes and come clean, so we may continue to heal and move on with our lives. …show more content…
She’s upset that John proctor decides to go back to being faithful to his wife. Abigail wants to take Mrs. Proctors place as Johns’ wife. Therefore she plants a needle on a doll Marry makes for Emily, and when Emily receives the doll, Abigail accuses her of voodoo to get back at Emily and John. The irony of the whole situation is that, when Abigail accuses Emily, john stays by Emily’s side a defends her in court, make their relationship stronger. Abigail’s thirst for revenge backfires and she must keep making up lies in court. The lesson we can take from this is to let life lead its course. Don’t let jealousy devour you, it’ll only make your situation
