What Role Does Beetles Play In Ecology Essay

Improved Essays
Beetles, a group of insects are part of Coleopteran Order, they can be easily identified because of their dark colored body. Beetles mostly live in hot, cold, dry, or moist condition and because the Great Basin is the home of arid climate beetles can be easily found. Many of their food sources come from leaves, seeds, fruits, or dead wood. However, if beetles have good diets and potentially find other food sources they could benefit their population growth (Arbogast, et al. 2010). Beetles can migrate from different places and adapt change quickly because of population growth.
The roles of Beetles in our ecosystem are very helpful, they are the ones, who recycle dung, making a positive purpose which Beetles place the dung in the soil that nourishes the Earth (Waldbauer 2003). Beetles also are the ones, reducing the amount of weed seeds in the soil. Farmers can benefit from this to ensure healthy soil in farming and that the control of weeds can also improve food security.

Some beetles are attracted to the smell of floral fragrance (Adler and Theis 2012) but for male beetles they response more on the cadaver odor (Ayasse et al. 2012). But why the difference in smell? Do most beetles prefer more of the cadaver odor? My group wants to answer these questions by conducting an experiment. Cadaver odor has a similar smell of formaldehyde and since cadaver odor attracts male beetles my group can propose that beetles are also attracted to the smell of formaldehyde. However, studies have not yet proven if beetles do attract formaldehyde, which is why my group is interested in doing this experiment. Our purpose is that we want to attract Coleoptera using formaldehyde. We predict that if beetles are attracted to formaldehyde, then the pitfall trap with formaldehyde will have more Coleoptera than the control

A invasive species is a species that is not native to a certain area. A invasive species is also most likely to cause enviromental harm. The Asian Long Horned Beetle is invasive because it was accidentally shipped to America and it is causing enviromental harm. like all plants and animals, the Asian Long-Horned Beetle has amazing characteristics; it also has negative and positives on North America. The most effective removal method is to start cutting down all the trees, since the Asian Long-Horned Beetle feeds on them.…

Environmental Effects on Pillbug Behavior Catherine Liapes October 14, 2015 AP Biology- Pd.9 Mr. Angus Introduction: Before conducting this lab, I researched information on pillbugs and learned that pill bugs are commonly found in damp environments such as piles of leaves, or under logs. Although they are crustaceous, they can still spend their entire lives on land. They are about ¾ inch in length with seven pairs of legs, and multiple antennae. Pillbugs are nocturnal and mainly consume rotting vegetation.…

Bed bugs have similar engorgement characterizes as many other bugs when it comes to the sodium solution concentrations. When offered only water versus when a solution that contained phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), the later was what was found to be the situation where more engorgement occurred. It was expressed that mouthparts that bring about the acceptance of different concentrations of sodium chloride are receptors known as gustatory receptions. In the instances lower sodium was engorged and high sodium was rejected.…

Purpose The purpose of this lab is to investigate animal behaviors by diving into the world of ethology. There are two ways pill bugs will respond to environmental stimuli: Kinesis (non-directional response) and taxis (directional response). Kinesis occurs when organisms (randomly) move around quickly when they’re unhappy and slowly when they’re happy, which is best demonstrated when one lifts up a rock or other material that the pill bugs are under. In contrast to the simpler response that does not necessarily involve many neurons, taxis is often observed in response to changes in light, heat, moisture, sound, and/or chemicals (odor).…

That is why it is very common to find one under a rock that has not been moved in a while. They are identified as detritivores, which consume dead organisms such as dead animals and dead plants through the process of decomposition (Wagler 2017). Decomposing soil is very acidic, and due their diet consisting of dead organisms, it is assumed that they favor acidic environments. In this lab the number of pill bugs that chose the acidic environment as opposed to the basic environment were examined. Similar studies tested the use of salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on lettuce plants and their effects of detering pill bugs (Tierranegra-garcía et al, 2011).…

Aethina Tumida, Small Hive Beetles (SHB), is native to sub-Saharan Africa, and it is a regular pest to the African subspecies of the western honey bee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus. Be that as it may, the beetle has been located outside of its natural habitat, where it is known to cause extensive damage to the plethora of colonies of the European subspecies of honey bees. In 1996, the small hive beetle was first sighted in the United States across a variety of states. There is no clear answer to how the beetles came over to the United States, but a multitude of people have the belief that the SHB first settled in Florida, and as the beekeepers from Florida migrated across the United States, the beetles followed. A. tumida is an invasive species and is causing many damages to the beekeeping…

Environmental Issue Paper, Justin Roch, ENG 101 E, 11/15/16 In the past couple of decades, an unprecedented threat to North America’s trees and forests has emerged in the form of two invasive species of beetles, the Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer. Both beetles are major pests of widespread forest and neighborhood trees, and if left unchecked, have the potential to completely change the character of our forests. Although not as widely known as some higher-profile environmental issues, invasive species like the Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer are nevertheless one of the greatest problems facing the environment today, and is a problem that is likely to grow still greater in the future.…

Callosobruchus maculatus are not considered directly harmful to humans; although, as an insect pest they damage millions of tons of human food crops in the form of legumes every year (Torres et al. 2016). Physically, they are small beetles, approximately 3.5 mm long. Because Callosobruchus maculatus larvae feed and develop exclusively on the seeds of legumes, the beetles are commonly referred to as "bean beetles. " Adult Callosobruchus maculatus have a very short lifespan of 6 to 14 days (Fox et al. 2006). During this short lifespan, adults do not eat or drink; instead, they spend all their time mating and laying eggs.…
