What Really Happened To Gatlinburg's Cabin?

Improved Essays
I was thrilled to be escaping from home and traveling to Gatlinburg. The cabin we would be renting was outstandingly gorgeous. I had my own full size bed , couch, and a full bathroom. Unfortunately it is a seven and half hour drive to the cabin from my house so of course we had to find something to do. We saw fifty out of fifty states, two provinces of Canada, and Great Britain license plates and the top three states we saw were Indiana, New York, and Ohio. This distracted our minds from time. Once we arrived in Gatlinburg all was left was to venture up the mountain to our getaway. The roads were narrow, steep, and curvy. It became tense creeping up on a corner hoping another car was not coming down our way. While going up we noticed every cabin had their own …show more content…
That night I smelled a foul smell escalating from the vents so I just sprayed some perfume and went to bed. A few hours later I was startled from a bright light in my room and naturally assumed my dad was checking on me. “I’m okay” I muttered and the light disappeared. Morning brought the knocking at the door. My dad opened the door to discover it was the mysterious neighbor. Looking right at me he spoke loudly, “The roads are closed going down. Can’t leave. Maybe not for the whole day or tomorrow. I am obligated by the owner to take care of you all. You all shall come to my cabin and stay.” My dad responded, “ No thank you we have food and all necessities to last us a week.” The neighbor didn’t like this, “NO.. I mean no sir, you absolutely cannot stay here you have to come with me. It’s my job sir.” That evening we were still at his house. It had stayed dark in there all day. But he turned out to be an okay guy. He has two daughters and a wife who have passed. He is a retired pilot from Texas. “ May I use the restroom?” I spoke softly. “ yes just not this one.. use the one upstairs. It’s the first door on your left.” He

A couple days passed and we finally reached Alcove Springs. I looked across the field and saw tall green grass and small hills barely peeking at the top of them. Wildflowers grew everywhere and it looked so pretty blending in with all the nature. The sunset between the small hills was a wonderful sight. We had to find flat land so we could camp there for two nights.…

“Wow!” I said to my dad as the coach bus rolled into the hilly parking lot of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on Mirror Lake. My eyes lit up with excitement like a dog seeing a new chew toy. The year was 2012, and I was a part of the Minnesota/Wisconsin Jr. Badgers also known as Team Lake Placid. The games were played at the Olympic Center where U.S.A beat the Soviet Union in 1980 in Lake Placid, New York.…

We piled into Steve's giant Lincoln Towncar and drove for hours out into the fields and pastures of Texas ranch country. Exhausted, David and I fell asleep in the back seat. After some time we were jostled awake when Steve turned off of the pavement onto a bumpy dirt road marked only by a gnarled old tree. His spread was a small homestead of 80 acres.…

I always believed in seat belts but never until the moment that it had effected my life. Little did I know that the monster lurking in the back of my mind, the fear that always existed when stepping into a car would come out on Aug 25, 2014. It was a long day after high school coming home tired and overwhelmed with all the homework for the night to come. With the hot sun beating down on us and the showers from the night before it made for extremely humid air however excitement was still in the air disregarding the humidity as we all prepared to attend my brother’s baseball game that afternoon. Having made a hard decision earlier before leaving on which car to take we decided on the new van my parents had purchased a month or two before, still having the new car smell as we entered.…

This too shall pass. I’ve been hurt many times, and so have you. As growing adolescents we played freely throughout the simplicity of our lives, skinning knees and bruising elbows, only for our wounds to heal. As our metaphoric birthday cakes gained candles, we learned that friendships have an expiration date, and so did our extended family member’s lives. Through it all we healed, or coped, and the sadness passed.…

This last summer I had the privilege to reenact an important part of history - the pioneer journey west. Although the trek was somewhat difficult I had many great experiences. While pulling and pushing a handcart for 7 miles a day was difficult, surprisingly, the hardest part of trek for me was enduring the 12 hour long car rid back, because I had to ride in the deacon’s (12 year old young men’s) car, with them singing along to Taylor Swift. From my experiences I had, I learned that the things the pioneers faced can help us to overcome the challenges of our day. Ronald Regan has been quoted as saying: “I do not want to go back to the past; I want to go back to the past way of facing the future.”…

Highway stretched behind me, winding up the coast in meandering curves. If one traced the path I’d gone, it would be through a tunnel, onwards through a small town that seemed frozen in time, and to a small emergency room that seemed like it rarely saw emergencies. Behind me was Washington, and on this bridge, I couldn’t quite be sure if I was in Oregon yet, but even if I was, it would still be 20 minutes until I got back to the campground. Well, it would have been 20 minutes if I’d actually known how to drive. November 2016.…

It was a bright, white, snowy, cold day. The roads are covered with snow and the fields look like clouds with trees, the edges of the clouds are the snow filled ditches with the ice covered frozen bottoms. Dad had the day off of work and asked if I wanted to go snowmobiling with him. I obviously said yes because I’ve wanted to go all year. After we put on all of our snow pants, coat, gloves, and helmet he helped me get the snowmobiles out of the garage and start them.…
