She has made history from being the first African American principle dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. “ Yes. And I think that the reason is the racism and not wanting to change this very traditional art form that has been, you know, successful in the way it is for so long. And it's hard to be the one that stands out when, you know, in a ballet company, you're trying to create unison and uniform when you're in a quarta ballet.” (Copeland) In her book “ Life in motion an unlikely ballernia” Misty kept repeating “this is for the little brown girls”. Misty wants to help all dancers of different race be able to do what they want in their dancing career. “ Fight even harder, she said because of some of the challenges she faced. First, as one of six children with a struggling single mother. Copeland told NPR, when she first started ballet lessons at 13, they were living in a motel. When Copeland started dancing professionally, she found that being biracial - half black, half white - became an issue.”
